Colors of Heritage and Home: An Introduction to Natural Dyeing

January 5, 12, 19 & 26, 2023 (four Thursday evenings) | offered through Arbutus Folk School | $135

In-person class series | Start the new year with color! In this four-week evening class that takes place in Marja’s home studio, you will learn about the color and natural dye traditions of Finland and the Indigenous Sámi of Europe’s far north, both of which are part of Marja’s heritage. Also, a series of hands-on natural dyeing activities will allow you to prepare, dye, and modify several fiber types using 4-5 different natural dye sources that will yield 16-20 colors, and you’ll explore ways to create a dye sample book to collect your color explorations. Participants will complete the class inspired and ready to continue their dye practice at home.

Marja will also support interested students in exploring the dyeing traditions of their own heritage, and offer support and guidance to develop their next dye project using local seasonal plants and/or plants connected to your own ancestry. Colors of Love

February 12, 2023, Sunday 10:00-5:00 | $109

In-person class | Celebrate the Valentine’s spirit with heart-warming hues from nature. Learn and practice simple dye methods. Create small, linen gift bags (perhaps for chocolates?) and vibrant silk scarves that are multicolor, natural fiber, and uniquely you!

All materials are provided, plus instructions to take home. No experience is needed. Bring your own sack lunch or go out/home. Snacks are provided.

‘Colors & Cocktails’ Pop-up Party!

February 14, 2023  | 6-9pm | $55

In-person event | Co-hosted by Marja Eloheimo (owner of ‘I Found the Colors’) and Sandy Hall (previous owner of Olympia’s iconic ‘Dillinger’s Cocktails and Kitchen’). Sandy will entice us with delicious cocktails (or mocktails) and Marja will guide us in creating fragrant, personalized, bath salt blends to take home in colorful silk bags.

Tickets include two cocktails or mocktails), two bath salt gift bags, and yummy treats. There will also be a cash (or Venmo) bar available beyond the aforementioned libations. Address provided upon ticket purchase. Tickets are limited.
