In the dye process, Marja uses methods and materials that are kitchen safe; in fact, Marja mostly dyes in her own kitchen where she first scours (cleans) the fibers with pH neutral soap and primarily uses alum (a pickling agent) and cream of tartar (a by-product of making wine) as mordants to help bind the pigments to the fibers. As afterbath modifiers, Marja typically uses baking soda and vinegar. If other mordants or modifiers are used — such as iron, tannins or copper — this will be noted. Marja seeks to offer alternatives to the highly toxic fashion, craft, and textile industries.
